Tobias Braun of Gaaden near Vienna.

  • Year:

    2013 - near new.

  • Body:

Ziricote - beautifully figured timber with a streak of sapwood down the centre of the back and all french-polished. The sound quality of this guitar with ziricote is very similar to those of rosewoods.

  • Front:

Canadian cedar - beautifully quartered revealing a lot of medullary. The soundhole incorporates a shallow tornovoz which deepens the bass sound and aids projection. The intricate rosette features a key motif; a heraldic symbol of the town. Rosewood bridge with bone capped tie-block.

  • Tuners:

Rubner tuners - especially made for Tobias with snakewood buttons, sideplate engraving and 'T.B.' initials.

  • Scale:

65cm. With 19 frets on an ebony fingerboard

  • Neck Width:

52mm at the nut with 42.5mm string spacing.

  • Weight:

    1615 grams

  • Condition:

This guitar made earlier this year was briefly owned and played very carefully by someone who decided to return to spruce guitars. Apart from two really tiny marks, it could be described a condition like new. All shellac french polished.

  • Comments:

Tobias Braun makes very high quality instruments often with exceptional material quality. This particular instrument has the most beautiful ziricote body with cedar front. With influences from 1912 Manuel Ramirez and 1924 Santos, these guitars are designed to maintain the quick, Spanish response of the smaller-bodied guitar combined with a rich, deep bass of larger Santos body.
This cedar instrument has the rich, full-bodied sound you would expect, but does not sound very cedary. In blind test I am not sure it comes across with obvious cedar character and has very good clarity and sustain. It is immediately persuasive with a deep bass combined with a rounded, clear yet characterful treble. A fine concert guitar for performer, collector or anyone that appreciates the beauty of this level of craftsmanship.
