• Year:

  1937. Labelled, dated and signed by the maker. Also under the spruce front is hand-written - 'Construido por Santos Hernandez, Madrid 1937' - and also stamped on the heel slipper.

• Body:

  Spanish cypress - of regular, good quality. With rosewood back centre line and simple bindings.
  Body length:- 484mm.
  Top bout:- 270 mm wide & 88 mm deep.
  Waist:- 236 mm & 90 mm deep.
  Bottom bout:- 363 mm wide & 90 mm deep.
  All shellac french-polished.

• Front:

  European spruce - a book-matched, silky top with a simplified rosette pattern of pink, red and green central tiles and rings with maple and rosewood outer rings. The rosewood bridge has bone-edged tie block capping. There is a smaller golpeador on the treble side only.

• Tuners:

  Traditional peg head with rosewood pegs having pearl end pips.

• Scale:

  654mm with 19 frets on an ebony fingerboard.

• Neck Width:

  50 mm at the nut with 41 mm string spacing.

• Weight:

  1105 grams.

• Condition:

  This flamenco guitar is very well-preserved. The back has a crack on each side of the bottom bout; one side glued only; the other side glued and cleated. Apart from the visible glue line, nothing to be done as they are completely closed and stable.
  The back of the neck has cejilla impressions mainly in the 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 5th fret positions. The neck is not thin so these could be removed if they bothered you.

• Comments:

  Santos Hernandez - what can you say ... a true great amongst guitar-makers of the first half of the 20th century. This instrument was made during the period of Spanish civil war (1936-1939) when presumably people had little money. Yet here is a guitar made with love and good materials, simple in decoration to keep the cost down but with a terrific sound. It has a depth of sound along with a melancholic, sweet flamenco character.
  Such a lovely instrument in terrific condition, with a sound to match - what a treat!
