2010 - number 280 - named 'Emma' after singer Emma Kirkby .... a beautiful clear voice!
Very beautiful Madagascan rosewood, mainly quarter-sawn with dramatic dark grain to the centre of the back emphasised by not having any decorative centre-strip, multi-coloured back purflings. Straight-grained sides with single purfling line and rosewood bindings.
All oil-varnished.
Beautiful, silky Italian spruce from the Dolomites, with Philip's vine motif rosette, rosewood bridge and dark purflings that very effectively frame the plantilla.
Waverly - Irving Sloane Leaf pattern engraved side-plates and ebony buttons mounted on a rosewood head.
65cm with 19 frets on an ebony fingerboard
52mm at the nut with 42.5 mm string spacing.
1455 grams
Immaculate; seemingly unplayed and not a mark.
This is one of the Philip Woodfield range of lattice concert guitars designed with power and volume in mind for the professional or ensemble player giving a rich, full yet clear sound. Players such as Raymond Burley speak very highly about the volume, balance and sustain of the lattice-fronted Grand Concert models. The GCIII has a slightly smaller body than the GCII (which also has an elevated fingerboard where this GCIII does not have).
These are certainly strong instruments with a pleasing, near-traditional sound; much more so than most lattice guitars. They also respond well when played softly and sensitively.
All together a very impressive concert guitar, hence the choice of many good professionals, with fine materials, handsome appearance and like new.Philip Woodfield - Click here to find out more about this maker
