Marcelo Barbero of Madrid - Ministrales 6

  • Year:

1953 - Flamenco blanca peg-head. Signed by the maker and stamped in three places internally.

  • Body:

Spanish cypress. Very straight-grained sides. With simple decoration in purflings and back centre line.

  • Front:

European spruce with a superb geometric rosette, so typical of the period, with black, reds and yellow. Clear golpeador.

  • Tuners:

    Traditional pegs - rosewood.

  • Scale:

65.8 cm. 19 frets on an ebony fingerboard.

  • Neck Width:

    51 mm at the nut.

  • Weight:

    1241 grams

  • Condition:

In remarkably good condition for a 58 year-old flamenco that has obviously been played and loved during those years. It appears to be in original condition but with a long-time-ago repair to the wing of the treble-side, lower bout of the front. The set-up remains superb and is still in a ready-to-impress condition as far as playing is concerned.

  • Comments:

Barbero is considered by many to be amongst the handful of revered, legendary flamenco makers of the 20th century. The US dealer who sold this guitar some years ago said "This is possibly the best sounding Barbero I have ever heard. I have known of this guitar for some time and have known a number of people who have played it, all were in awe. The basses have that perfect flamenco sound. They are punchy and crisp, yet have very nice sustain. The beautiful trebles can bite as well as sing. It plays like a dream and is in original condition except for a repair on the lower bout. In amazing condition for its age, it has been well cared for and treasured by its previous owners, whom I know. To top it off, the pegs are smooth and easy to operate, yet hold the tuning firmly without a lot of fussing. It just simply doesn"t get any better than this. With good Barbero's becoming almost impossible to find, anyone even remotely hoping to own a Barbero one day should sell their car to buy this one."
Well, there you have it. To find any Barbero guitar in any condition is very hard these days, so to have one with such superb sound and still in 'fighting fit' playing condition is a bit of a treat.
