Marcelino Lopez Nieto of Madrid

  • Year:

    1970 - number 549

  • Body:

Spanish cypress with rosewood bindings. Although cypress is mainly used for flamenco guitars, this is definitely a classical guitar. We spoke to Marcelino who confirmed that several clients in Denmark for example, were keen on cypress classicals.

  • Front:

European spruce - with lovely ambered colour, quite a lot of medullary rays and with a colourful rosette with inter-woven motifs. Rosewood bridge.

  • Tuners:

Spanish - Fustero probably with lyre pattern sideplates

  • Scale:

    658mm

  • Neck Width:

    51mm at the nut

  • Weight:

1299 grams - quite light in weight.

  • Condition:

The head has been brilliantly repaired following transport damage - it is very hard to see and is equally strong and long-lasting as before.
The front has one glued and cleated crack below the bridge. There are no other repairs or cracks. It has general playing wear - the back having some areas of button marks and the front has quite a lot of nail marks - but as can be seen from the photos, the marks are seen mainly when the light reflects on the surface.

  • Comments:

This is from a fine period of making by Marcelino Lopez Nieto. The cypress back and sides are an uncommon feature, though several others were made at this time. The look, sound and feel is typical Marcelino Lopez.
With the two repairs and playing wear, the price is set low for quick sale.
