Manuel Hernandez y Victoriano Aguado of Madrid

  • Year:

1961 - number 191. Although stating 1958 on the label, this guitar was actually made in 1961. From knowledge of the HyA guitar numbers, no. 191 is too high a number to have been assigned in 1958. The son of the original owner confirms that his family lived in Madrid at the time with the intention to return to England and that it was ordered in 1958 / 1959, made and collected in 1961. Number 191 stamped also under the bridge-plate and tail block.

  • Body:

Beautiful rosewood. The back is not really book matched and characteristically without centre strip. The sides are book matched.
Top bout:- 274 mm wide & 97 mm deep.
    Waist:- 233 mm wide.
Bottom bout:- 365 mm wide & 99 mm deep.

  • Front:

European spruce with the well recognised central motif in the rosette.

  • Tuners:

    Fustero - the originals.

  • Scale:

    65cm including intonation compensation.

  • Neck Width:

    50 mm at the nut.

  • Weight:

    1514 grams

  • Condition:

In really superb condition. There is one small, really insignificant crack in the front with two cleats underneath, right on the very edge of the bass-side waist. The back and sides appear to be in fabulous, original condition. Some marks on the back of the neck.
To correct intonation difficulties often found with these guitars, it has just been brought to performance-worthy accuracy and re-fretted.

  • Comments:

This is a one-owner guitar made in 1961 for a lady who lived at the time in Madrid and studied with Miguel Esqembre who was very friendly with the makers. With a little smaller plantilla than many Hernandez y Aguado guitars, but the same body depth, it has the same refined sound qualities and lovely depth from an air resonance near F#. Beautiful to look at and lovely to play; what a gem!
