Manouk Papazian of New York.

  • Year:

    1970

  • Body:

Simply wonderful rosewood; the good old stuff - as good as it gets. The back is dark but dramatic, the spider-webbed sides are superb and in terrific condition

  • Front:

European Spruce with bearclaw and lovely pale amber colour. The rosette is delightful and has his unique way of including his name in the mosaic. The decorative purflings also work particularly well combining with all elements to make the whole guitar front a real picture

  • Tuners:

Recent Nicolo Alessi on a rosewood-faced head.

  • Scale:

    65cm

  • Neck Width:

    51mm at the nut

  • Condition:

The condition is superb. The back, sides, head and neck are as near-new. The front has some superficial playing wear on the treble-side of the rosette but nothing that breaks the polish surface; otherwise it looks gorgeous.

  • Comments:

What a lovely instrument - from this Armenian-born, New York maker who recently seems to have his reputation more rightfully recognised than before his death in 1999. These guitars are of real quality in terms of their materials, build quality and sound. I like them also for their tasteful design and decorative details. The sounds of this one are clear, precise and with good balance. The body resonance is between G and G# so is not boomy or overpowering in the bass which is nevertheless sufficiently strong and focussed. The treble is bright yet sweet. Volume and power is medium compared to many of today's loud guitars but its traditional character and projection through clarity win over. All together a really lovely, traditional classical guitar
