1982 - From the personal collection of Julian Bream's performance instruments - a one-off and highly decorated Baroque-style guitar with hand-written label, signed and dated by José Romanillos.
9-piece back mainly of cypress / maple / sycamore with rosewood outer sections and extensive ebony inset decoration - The neck and heel are also ebony veneered. José really went to town on this one!
European spruce, rosewood tie-block with leaved extensions, chevron purflings and decorative rose.
Hand-carved wooden pegs on a head that is ebony veneered both front and back.
650mm. 5-course with 4 pairs plus a single top string.
48mm at the nut
In very good, original condition - no repairs and no cracks. There is some minor separation between back and sides just at the bottom of the instrument - likely to be an easy fix. By comparison with the renaissance-style instrument offered as part of the lot, this is a lavish and highly decorative instrument
Used by Julian Bream originally on RCA Victor and BMG Classics recordings and re-released on The Music of Spain compilations in 1993 - hear volume 9, pieces by Gaspar Sanz and Guerau on tracks 2,3,4,5 & 6 which demonstrate well the excellent sound qualities of the guitar. It can also be seen and heard on the DVD's Guitarra and My Life in Music. A rare chance to own instruments commissioned by Julian Bream and played by him in concerts, on CD's and DVD's.
