Francisco Simplicio of Paseo San Juan 110, Barcelona

  • Year:

    1928 - number 175

  • Body:

Satinwood - Chloroxylon swietenia - really beautiful timber with selected figuring that some people refer to as bee's wing. Multi-lined purflings with subtle colours to back and sides.

  • Front:

European spruce - with lacquered wooden tornovoz, colourful rosette and matching decorative purflings and tie-block decoration to the rosewood bridge.

  • Tuners:

Simplicio originals (?) with oval, mother-of-pearl buttons. Headface with typical, decorative carving.

  • Scale:

648mm with 19 frets on the ebony fingerboard.

  • Neck Width:

    50mm at the nut

  • Weight:

    1580 grams

  • Condition:

This 1928 guitar is in very good condition though not like a new one of course. The front has one repaired, 22cm crack on the bass side extending from below the rosette, passing under the bridge wing to the bottom. A second crack, 6cm in length, is only just visible at the bottom of the front on the treble side below the bridge wing.
The back and sides are in exceptional condition with no visible cracks, but re-polished.
The front has also been polished over the original with some old marks and dirty patches underneath.
There is some distortion of the top - so common in these guitars, where the front between soundhole and bridge becomes a little concave, but not extremely so in this case.
It comes with original case which has high quality external and internal details though needs much restoration of hinges and clasps.

  • Comments:

These guitars of Francisco Simplicio (and of Enrique Garcia) have such distinctive sound character, appearance and decoration, that they are quite special in the minds of many guitarists and collectors. Their design influence, passing through Enrique Coll, also in Barcelona, is seen clearly in the earlier guitars of Ignacio Fleta.
This one with its satinwood body is highly attractive and has the typical Simplicio sound; though particularly deep with air resonance down at C#-D in this case due to the soundhole tornavoz giving rise to the very deep bass. The middle and treble is typical and characterful with some notes shorter or longer than others as with the vast majority of these instruments.
Increasingly rare to find these days, such an attractive Simplicio is a delight to have and to play.
