Dominique Field of Paris

  • Year:

2008 - number 187 - not actually completed until 2010. Labelled, numbered and dated by the maker.

  • Body:

Rosewood - a 3-piece back, very dark in colour with lovely grain variations and with very fine line purflings. Aimed at power and effective projection, the design of this instrument has traditionally-positioned back bars and single thickness sides with side-stiffening elements at close spacing intervals. All shellac french-polished.
    Body length:- 485 mm.
Top bout:- 280 mm wide & 94 mm deep.
    Waist:- 240 mm & 98 mm deep.
Bottom bout:- 362 mm wide & 96 mm deep.

  • Front:

Swiss spruce - a beautifully quartered, silky top with plenty of medullary figuring over the soundboard. Exquisite rosette with very fine details and rich colours - and very fine purfling lines; all characteristic of the highest standards of French lutherie. Rosewood bridge with bone-capped tie-block.

  • Tuners:

A new 2015 set of Rodgers with Hauser-shaped, engraved brass side-plates and dark mother-of-pearl buttons.

  • Scale:

65cm with 19 frets on an ebony fingerboard

  • Neck Width:

52mm at the nut with 42.5 mm string spacing.

  • Weight:

    1750 grams

  • Condition:

Overall the condition is very good. The back and sides are in lovely condition with hardly any marks. The back of the neck and head have some really very small marks. The front has some playing and handling marks - of the sort that is mainly in the polish and shows only when the light is reflecting from it.

  • Comments:

This is a fine guitar from Dominique Field made for his wife, professional guitarist Catherine Liolios. It was started in 2008 but being worked on in between customer orders, it was finally completed later in 2010. You will imagine that such a guitar made for Catherine was done with some extra care and attention to detail.
With an order list of more than 10 years, his recent instruments have been very difficult to find and are sought-after by players and collectors alike. They are amongst the very strongest sound-projecting yet traditionally-built concert guitars available anywhere in the world. Their sound is very even, pure and focussed allowing the accomplished player to find his / her own colours. This particular one is an obviously strong, loud instrument with a bright, clear sound that at the same time facilitates tone variety - worthy of many a professional concert player.
This is a rare opportunity to have a highly-refined concert guitar from a maker whose reputation for impeccable quality of construction is rarely equalled.
