David Rubio of Duns Tew, Oxfordshire

  • Year:

1978. Labelled and stamped DR. Also 'DJR' engraved on the tuning machines.

  • Body:

East Indian Rosewood - fine quality and well quarter-sawn. With double-line purfling to the back and sides.
    All shellac french-polished.

  • Front:

European spruce - probably Swiss with some bearclaw figuring. 6-fan strut design, typical of this period of the maker's output. Shellac french-polished.

  • Tuners:

David Rodgers tuners with highly-detailed engraving to the side plates and bone kidney buttons, mounted on the rosewood-faced head. The end of the sideplates have the initial 'DJR' in the engraving. An outrageously expensive set of Rodgers.

  • Scale:

65cm. 19 frets on an ebony fingerboard.

  • Neck Width:

53 mm at the nut - but with 42.5mm string spacing as you would find on many 52mm wide nuts.

  • Weight:

    1645 grams

  • Condition:

This guitar is in lovely condition.
The top of the rosewood back has a 3cm grainline crack which has been stabilised with a cleat inside. It is completely stable and insignificant. Otherwise no cracks or repairs.
The front was shellac re-polished some years ago to replace an oil-finish that had become dirty and grubby.

  • Comments:

This is one of not many guitars that David Rubio produced in the 1970's. Having engaged fine artisans like Paul Fischer, Edward Bryn Jones and others in the early 70's, for guitar making, David Rubio focussed on other instrument building. This guitar is quite different from the workshop guitars - the head shape, and tuners were specific to David.
Soundwise, it is smooth, rounded, refined, balanced, elegant ... everything that the best David Rubio guitars were known for.
A rare opportunity to find such a fine and handsome example in fine condition.
