Christopher Dean of Kingham, Oxon.

  • Year:

2003 - number 315. Labelled, dated, numbered and signed by the maker.

  • Body:

East Indian rosewood - beautiful, straight-grained with lovely colour variations and highly effective purfling to back and sides. The sides are lined with mahogony contributing to a stronger, forward-projecting sound. All shellac french-polished.

  • Front:

Canadian cedar of very fine quality - a beautifully book-matched top with character and a lot of medullary rays, showing it to be well quarter-sawn. The rosette is one of Christopher's most attractive and a design to which he has recently returned. Rosewood bridge having bone-framed tie-block with abalone insert.

  • Tuners:

Waverly-Sloane with white rollers, patterned brass side-plates and ebony buttons.

  • Scale:

65cm with 19 frets on an ebony fingerboard.

  • Neck Width:

52mm at the nut with 42 mm string spacing.

  • Weight:

    1737 grams

  • Condition:

Having had some refreshment of the polish a few years ago, the guitar looks good. The back and sides are in very good order. The front has some end-of-nail marks, a few small handling marks and a string ding below the 1st string tie point. All quite harmless and looking quite normal for a guitar that has been played a lot and loved since new.

  • Comments:

Christopher Dean's guitars need little introduction of course. Mainly making with spruce fronts, Christopher produces one like this with cedar top occasionally - but when he does so ... Boy - are they good! Having the richness, warmth and strength of cedar they also have by design or instinct, the clarity and sustain more commonly associated with spruce.
This is an immediately impressive performance instrument full of expressive musical potential, energy and projection, beautifully-made and very handsome.

"Having known Miles for many years now I can say with some authority that dealing with him is a pleasure, due largely to my secure feeling that he, like me, has a genuine love of his subject. Over the years I have always been eager to hear feedback from both Miles, and his customers, and this has helped me greatly to bolster my own passion for the guitar and to refine my work ."
