Christopher Dean of Kingham, Oxon.

  • Year:

1995 - number 219. Labelled, numbered, dated and signed by the maker.

  • Body:

Good quality, straight-grained, East Indian rosewood with single line box purfling and rosewood bindings.
    Body length:- 476mm.
Top bout:- 273 mm wide & 95 mm deep.
    Waist:- 233 mm & 98 mm deep.
Bottom bout:- 357 mm wide & 98 mm deep.
I suspect the back, sides, neck and head reverse are finished in varnish.

  • Front:

European spruce with pronounced bearclaw markings, full of character, attractive purfling, rosewood bindings and with rosewood bridge with bone-edged tie-block capping.
The front appears to be shellac french-polished.

  • Tuners:

Waverly-Sloane with synthetic ivory buttons on a rosewood-faced head.

  • Scale:

64cm with 19 frets (plus 20th for the 1st string) on an ebony fingerboard.

  • Neck Width:

51mm at the nut with 43.5 mm string spacing.

  • Weight:

    1427 grams

  • Condition:

The guitar has normal playing and handling marks; relatively little on the back and sides - the front had numerous small marks from string-changing and playing nail marks but this has been re-polished. There is a small area on the reverse of the neck; 1st position, where the polish was rubbed through but polish has been added back.

  • Comments:

This is a very pleasing and friendly guitar to play - though not as deep in voice as more recent ones, it has warm, rounded, traditional tones, good clarity, projection and balance - all very typical of Christopher Dean concert guitars. The 64cm scale length is helpful to players with smaller hands or with a short, left hand, little finger. At well below the price of a new or more recent one, this is a good option to have a guitar of such quality at lower financial outlay.

"Having known Miles for many years now I can say with some authority that dealing with him is a pleasure, due largely to my secure feeling that he, like me, has a genuine love of his subject. Over the years I have always been eager to hear feedback from both Miles, and his customers, and this has helped me greatly to bolster my own passion for the guitar and to refine my work ."
