2015 - number 46.
Pau Ferro (Machaerium scleroxylon) ; sometimes called Morado or Bolivian rosewood (though it is not a true rosewood). Very attractive tonewood timber, mainly straight-grained with some sapwood to the lower bout extremities. The mid-brown colour is similar to many rosewood boards. With double, fine line purfling and rosewood bindings.
Body length:- 486 mm.
Top bout:- 280 mm wide & 98 mm deep.
Waist:- 236 mm wide.
Bottom bout:- 370 mm wide & 97 mm deep.
European spruce - very well quarter-sawn, with extensive showing of medullary rays and some bearclaw figuring. The exquisite rosette is one of the most impressive and beautiful that I have seen. Rosewood bridge with bone-capped tie-block.
Nicolo Alessi - style 11 with Hauser-shaped side-plates with snakewood inlay and snakewood buttons
65cm with 19 frets on an ebony fingerboard.
52mm at the nut with 43.5 mm string spacing.
New - All shellac french-polished.
An extremely handsome and elegant instrument.
Here is another fine instrument from Bertrand Ligier who is clearly a talented and determined maker. He is achieving a high level of fine craftsmanship that many makers fail to achieve in a lifetime. With clear influences from Robert Bouchet, there are also design and aesthetic reminders of Dominique Field and Jean-Noël Rohé.
The sound character of this guitar is similarly strong, with full bass (G air resonance), a treble that is clear, bright, focussed with good projection. Immediately impressive, it has the energy of some modern construction instruments but with greater facility for tone variety.
A really good instrument and an opportunity to have one from a maker clearly going places.Bertrand Ligier - Click here to find out more about this maker
