Manuel Reyes of Plaza del Potro, Cordoba

  • Year:

1975 - labelled, stamped, dated and signed by the maker.

  • Body:

Spanish cypress, with rosewood bindings and back centre-strip. All shellac french-polished

  • Front:

European spruce - a silky top, quite even grain width and plenty of medullary ray showing. Rosewood bridge, attractive rosette and clear golpeador.

  • Tuners:

Traditional head with original rosewood pegs each with pearl dot in tact.

  • Scale:

657mm. 19 frets on an ebony fingerboard

  • Neck Width:

53 mm at the nut - with 44mm string spacing.

  • Weight:

    1255 grams - very light

  • Condition:

This guitar is in lovely, well-cared-for condition.
The back, sides, neck, head, pegs, fingerboard and frets all appear to be in original condition. There are some areas where the polish is thinned or rubbed through and with only very modest playing marks.
I find just one insignificant 3-4cm grain crack line in the cypress side on the underneath of the treble bottom bout. Other than that, there are no other repairs or cracks.
The top has been shellac repolished when the original golpeador was replaced and does look very handsome. The high quality case is an unusual original bought in California, is petite and in excellent condition.

  • Comments:

If ever I was tempted to keep a fine flamenco guitar, this could be it. The sound and condition is wonderful, with plenty of vitality, explosive release of sound and a penetrating clarity. Good vintage Reyes guitars are less easy to find these days and this is such a good one of those.
