In the normal course of events of buying and selling guitars, we occasionally come across some that are rare and so special that we wish to keep them for some time. This is therefore our small, permanent collection of instruments that are not currently for sale. We have some early ideas about having some CD recordings made using these instruments and perhaps arranging some recitals featuring them.

Hermann Hauser II of Reisbach - Germany

  • Year:

    1958 - December - No. 632

  • Body:

Indian rosewood - with really beautiful figuring and colours. Hermann Hauser III has said how his father called the old, high quality Indian rosewood, that came from virgin forests, 'Oasis rosewood'. If Indian rosewood were as beautiful as this all the time, the demand for south american rosewoods would be much less.
    Total weight 1373 grams

  • Front:

Bavarian spruce - with a gorgeous rosette, black rosewood bridge and the double, green purflings.

  • Tuners:

Original Lansdorfers with engraved sideplates and the characterstic button colour.

  • Scale:

    646mm

  • Neck Width:

    50mm at the nut

  • Condition:

The condition is wonderful for a 50 year-old guitar. It is in original condition, with no repairs or cracks. The bridge saddle is not the original which are usually the same 'orangey' colour as the nut and tuner buttons. The body has nitro-varnish finish; as did many at that time. There are some faint crazing, crackling lines in the finish, which being more resistant than shellac, has probably helped preserve the condition. The one original owner has looked after this instrument and the original documentation, magnificently.

  • Comments:

Well folks, for me, this is as good as it can get. What a magnificent guitar that seems to have everything and no weaknesses. The air resonance is around F#; like so many of the best Hausers including the 1937 Segovia Hauser. So it has impressive depth and preserves very well the bottom octave of the bass notes. The middle and treble just sing with un-nerving sustain. It is a remarkable guitar in which players do not find any weak notes. It responds wonderfully to being played softly yet at the same time, if you play something more harsh and aggressive, it responds well to that too. It is a glorious guitar to play and has a soundworld that is so lyrical and full of magic that is really makes the player lift their game.
