Arcangel Fernandez of Madrid

  • Year:

Made in 1958 - number 48. Labelled, signed, dated, numbered and stamped internally, including down in the lower sides

  • Body:

Spanish cypress - beautiful amber-coloured timber with very straight and stable grain on both back and sides. Simple back centre-strip and plain rosewood bindings so characteristic of flamenco instruments.
Top bout:- 278 mm wide & 91 mm deep.
    Waist:- 240 mm
Bottom bout:- 364 mm wide & 94 mm deep.

  • Front:

European spruce - with even grain spacing and a clear, replacement golpeador that is larger than the original has been. The rosette is one of those beautiful geometric designs so typical of the top Madrid makers of this period

  • Tuners:

Machine tuners that appear to be the originals, with engraved, nickel / silver sideplates and cream colour buttons.

  • Scale:

66cm with 19 frets on an ebony fingerboard. Playing action very low at 2.4mm on the 6th and 2mm on the 1st at the 12th fret.

  • Neck Width:

    51mm at the nut

  • Weight:

    1332 grams

  • Condition:

All French polished - and looking very good but with likelihood of some re-polishing or over-polishing. The front has one short, glued tight and single-cleated crack on the upper bout, treble-side and the possibility; very hard to be sure, of a crack on the bass side - I think not, but would rather describe with caution. Really in superb condition for a 50-year-old flamenco guitar and sounding magnificent.

  • Comments:

Arcangel - what can you say? One of the great flamenco makers of all time - and here an example in really fine shape with sounds that are very special and complex. To watch and hear it played by its recent professional owner, Esteban Antonio - who sadly died this year after a long period of illness - see http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WkcO4V6T7W8. It is very crisp and immediate with a penetrating character. In the hands of an accomplished flamenco, this guitar gives out real magic. The action and set-up feels just right. So, if seeking a very special guitar, here is an increasingly rare opportunity to acquire a flamenco guitar from one of Spain's living, but now retired, great flamenco makers and played professionally by a talented guitarist composer.
Esteban Antonio first bought this guitar in 2010. He adored it but had to re-sell it later to fund medical treatment. He was able to take it back in 2017 but never regained sufficient strength to play it well. This guitar is being re-sold with zero commission so that 100% of the sale proceeds go to Esteban's widow.
